GDSC Indonesia Summit 2022
GDSC Indonesia Summit 2022 was an event held by Google Indonesia. This event took place offline at the Google Indonesia office in the Pacific Century Place building, Jakarta, as well as at the JS Luwansa Hotel, Jakarta. It was attended by 73 leaders from GDSC communities across 73 universities in Indonesia, invited via email sent by the Google Developer Student Club Indonesia. The entire event was funded and sponsored by Google Indonesia, covering hotel accommodations, meals, and round-trip transportation (airplane tickets, train tickets, taxis, etc.).
The event lasted for 3 days and 2 nights, starting on Friday afternoon with a gathering at the JS Luwansa Hotel for registration/check-in to distribute rooms and provide a swag package (hats, stickers, etc.) before heading to the Google Indonesia office at Pacific Century Place. During the visit to the Google Indonesia office, participants attended a Welcome & Kick-Off session led by Google Indonesia’s Managing Director, Mr. Randy Jusuf, followed by opening remarks from Mrs. Yuana Rochma Astuti (Baparekraf) and a talk show session with Mr. Diky Muljana and Mr. Emanuel Ryan, employees of Google Indonesia.
After this session, the event continued with an office tour of Google Indonesia, where participants were shown various relaxation and workspaces and allowed to take photos in the office. After the tour, participants enjoyed a dinner together and had informal discussions with other attendees or Google Developers present. They were then escorted back to the JS Luwansa Hotel to rest for the next day’s activities.
The next morning, Saturday, participants prepared for the next session and gathered in the auditorium of the JS Luwansa Hotel. The morning session began with a presentation on ‘GDSC Structure and a Year Ahead’ by Google Community Manager for the Indonesia & Brunei region, Danang Juffry. The event continued with a game of building towers using spaghetti and marshmallows, symbolizing the philosophy of building a GDSC community in the future. The author’s team won by constructing the tallest tower among the participants.
The event proceeded with a session on ‘Future Ready for the Tech Industry’ presented by Google SEA Regional Lead, Janise Tan. Following this, there were presentations from previous GDSC Leads on building communities and ensuring their success on campus. The event continued with Unconference discussions, allowing participants to choose which sessions they wanted to attend and actively participate in. Participants engaged in idea collection, discussions, feedback sessions, or similar formats requiring input from everyone.
Next, participants were allowed to enjoy snacks provided by Google. Following this, Google Technical Project Manager, Ms. Febria Rosita, presented on ‘Intro to Google Product.’ Afterward, Janise Tan returned to present on ‘Marketing & Branding Your Chapter.’ The session continued with a former lead discussing how to conduct Study Jams and participate in events organized by Google.
The next topic was ‘Designing Your Community & Running Your First Event,’ presented again by Ms. Febria Rosita. The event then included a session titled ‘Kickstarting Your GDSC,’ where participants formed groups and were given a scenario to plan their chapter for the coming year. This session involved designing and discussing the chapter to create or build a community plan for the year ahead. The event concluded with presentations of community plans for the upcoming year from each group, followed by group photos, and participants were dismissed for Maghrib prayers.
After Maghrib, participants gathered by the pool at the JS Luwansa Hotel for the final event, which included sharing messages and impressions, expressions of gratitude, birthday surprises, and awarding prizes to the winners of the earlier games. In this instance, the author’s team successfully won and received swag merchandise directly from Google Community Manager for the Indonesia & Brunei region, Mr. Danang Juffry. The event ended with group photos, dinner, and informal discussions with former GDSC leads, participants, or other Google Developers.
The following morning, participants were able to have breakfast in the hotel lobby before checking out. Before heading home, the author shared breakfast with other participants, engaging in casual conversations and sharing experiences. After that, the author packed their belongings and checked out of the hotel.
